Spring is one of the most beautiful seasons to observe nature, which is slowly waking up. We follow Alexander, nature guide to Bassin, who gives us his 5 favorites for nature walks in Spring on the Arcachon Bay !
1. The Salt Meadows of Arès Lège
Direction the marked trails of Prés Salés d'Arès-Lège to discover hundreds of species of plants and animals! Swamp, forest, sandy path and savannah landscape, the vegetation is omnipresent and you will surely come across some green lizards on your way. Even if Alexandre, who is used to the place, immediately spots the European pond turtles on a tree trunk, you will certainly need a pair of binoculars to notice them. A pretty corner of nature that you will love to explore with the children.
2. The Domaine de Juillet and Graveyron
If you choose, you can set off on the 14 km route from domain of Certainly or 5 km from domain of Graveyron. On your way, if you look up closely, you will see swans, egrets and many other species right by your side! If the tide is high, remember to bring swimsuits for swimming on the beach. the wild beach of Graveyron, with a view of the whole Bassin. Nature lovers will be sure to appreciate this moment!
3. The Dune of Pilat
Climb to the top of the highest sand dune in Europe for a panorama on the Bassin of Arcachon ! After the effort, the view of the nature reserve of Banc d'Arguin, the landes forest, IBird Island and the Lège-Cap Ferret peninsula is simply magnificent! Once at the top of the Dune du Pilat, do not hesitate to explore the surroundings. There is a hike on an interpretive trail to discover endemic plants such as the sand everlasting.
Spring is migration time! If sometimes the Reserve may seem a little less inhabited, at this time of year, thousands of birds pass through here. In a few hours or a few days, the bird population can even double! Equip yourself with a pair of binoculars at the entrance to the site to admire the very slow flight of a gray heron or try to recognize certain species from the trail observatories.
5. The Leyre Delta
The locals also call it the small basin amazon for its very wild side. By bike or on foot, the mouth trail is a good way to discover the Leyre and its marshes while taking your time. On the water, boats or canoes also offer walks along the small canals and reed beds. A magical moment! At the mouth, you will witness the meeting between the fresh waters of the river and the waters of the Arcachon Bay. A getaway far from the hustle and bustle of the city!
