Escape on the water…
The boat trip on the Arcachon Bay is a must-do experience and it's possible all year round! A little advice: opt for high tide, as boats can get closer to the cabanes tchanquées (stilt cabins). You can make reservations at the Tourist Offices, from the piers, or online through the providers' websites. You also have the option to charter a boat to tour the Île aux Oiseaux (Bird Island).
For the more adventurous, you can reach thebird island in sea kayakThis is actually the best option to get a closer look at the cabanes tchanquées (stilt cabins)! There are various options, from simple discovery tours (2 hours), a longer tour (3 hours) or the extensive tour between land and sea (4 to 5 hours).
A word of advice: avoid the walk around Île aux Oiseaux during the peak summer season. Early autumn or spring will offer a more serene experience, and you might even feel like you have the famous cabanes all to yourselves!
Located in the middle of the Arcachon Bay, the Île aux Oiseaux (bird island) boasts two wooden cabins on stilts that stand proudly.
Originally built for monitoring oyster parks, they are not accessible to the public and cannot be visited from the inside.
At high tide, you can approach and circle the cabanes tchanquées (stilt cabins) from your boat.
At low tide, their foundations are revealed, and you might find yourself venturing barefoot in the mud, making your way to their steps.
